Alice in wonderland and drugsAlice in Wonderland is a classic, all-time favorite novel, aimed at children, written in the late 18th century by Lewis Carroll (which was the pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). It is also a movie made by Walt Disney Pictures. The novel narrates the story of a lovable girl, called Alice, who curiously falls down a rabbit hole and emerges into a fantastic world populated by strange creatures and experiences even stranger things (which includes shrinking in size, getting enlarged later, meeting a talking mouse, a caterpillar smoking a hookah, attending a "mad" tea party, meeting a Cheshire cat, getting an audience with the Queen of Hearts, etc., etc.). Whether Alice in Wonderland and drugs are connected has been a matter of debate for generations. There is an instance in the book where Alice is told to bite off a piece of a huge mushroom from one side, in order to grow smaller, and from the other side to grow bigger. This could be one of the reasons why Alice in Wonderland and drugs got crosslinked in the minds of people. Again, in the 1960s, a band called Jefferson Airplane brought out a song called "The White Rabbit" that popularized Alice in Wonderland and drugs in an interconnected way. It should be mentioned that it is a white rabbit that Alice follows into the rabbit hole and that white rabbit is a slang for psychedelic drugs like LSD. Also, the song made note of the hookah-smoking caterpillar and various other fantasy-like images that run rampant in the book, to allude to Alice in Wonderland and drugs. To lend credence to the theory behind Alice in Wonderland and drugs, there were rumors that the author of the book was actually on drugs while writing it, but this is unsubstantiated. Also, during the 1970s, many hippies and college students loved watching Walt Disney movies for their psychedelic images and colors and it is no wonder that Alice in Wonderland and drugs again got mixed up, as the movie based on the book was re-released with advertisements such as "Down the rabbit hole and through the talking door lies a world where vibrant colors merge into shapes of fantasy and music radiates from flowers". Alice in Wonderland and drugs use was connected because the images and experiences narrated in the book were out of this world and very much like the psychedelic images visualized by drug users. For example, Alice's adventures could be related to the "trip" experienced in the wake of a drug-induced hallucination. During this, drug users often experience a heightened sense of awareness of colors and sounds, much like what Alice experiences in the book. Also, many people will experience a sensation of time slowing down, much like what happens to Alice when she tumbles down the rabbit hole. Then the fact that Alice is able to shrink and expand in size by eating a mushroom, and that certain mushrooms have been known from time immemorial to have the power to expand mental perceptions and induce hallucinations was even more fodder for the masses. All this and more could have led to the link between an innocent and fun-loving children's book like Alice in Wonderland and drugs!
