Art as culture
When we talk about art as culture it definitely touches upon the subject of the influence of art on culture and vice-versa. Art and culture go hand in hand in the sense that they both contribute to each other’s enrichment and refinement in a reinforcing manner.
Art as Culture: Artistic forms influence culture and traditions
The birth of new ideas and thinking is not the privilege of the select few like the politicians and the philosophers. In fact visual art and literature have contributed in an immense way in presenting new thoughts and ideas which have influenced humanity in a profound manner. The artistic expressions in various forms have played a major impact over the centuries whether it is the influence on the right of freedom and the importance of the self or whether it be the impact on the struggle to change the morbid and outdated customs and traditions of the society for newer ideals. Therefore we can say that artistic expressions have helped to evolve the culture and tradition of societies in a major way and in fact the existence of art as culture has been the source of creativity and change in all historical time periods of human evolution.
Art as Culture: Culture and traditions are closely integrated with artistic forms in a society
On the other hand culture and tradition of a society makes a great impact on the artistic expressions of that society. It has been see that visual arts and visual artists of many indigenous cultures are actually closely related and integrated to other art forms and activities of that particular culture and they are frequently unable to be isolated from these other functions of the community. This shows how closely integrated is the art and culture of many a traditional society around the world. Based on this fact we need to understand that if we need to appreciate and value various art forms emerging from the various traditions and cultures then we need to play a close attention to the integrated existence of a particular culture and its art forms.
Art as Culture: Artistic expressions based on the region, culture, tradition and religion
As art is closely related to the society we have segregation of the artistic expressions based on the region, culture, tradition and religion. We may have the Western art, Eastern art, Asian art, European art, American art, Native American art, Art of Central America, Art of South America, Gothic art, Celtic art, Byzantine art, Pop art, Islamic art, art related to Christianity, Buddhist art and Hindu art etc.
There are many more segregations and micro segregations of different types of artistic expressions based on region, culture, tradition and religion and all of them coexist with the main stream of artistic traditions and influence each other in a significant manner in today’s rapidly evolving world.
Keeping all the above facts in mind we need to acknowledge and reemphasize the fact that art as culture is helping humanity to move forward with creativity and generative change.
