Art today
Art today is different from what it was in the past. Though "artistic works" are different in different era but from whichever era the art originates the creation of the art follows a particular language based on the elements and principles of art. This is more profoundly visible in art today. It also becomes easy for us to appreciate a particular piece of art if we are aware of the elements and principles of the art that the artist has used to express his ideas and emotions.
Art can be divided into ancient, modern, post modern and contemporary art. In olden times in most part of the world artists were involved in portraying the visible reality that they saw. This amounted to figures, still life and landscapes. Most of the artists were involved with creations that depicted unity, balance and harmony. Then came the modern era which saw the advent of the abstract art where the piece of art that was created did not depict an object in a natural world but instead used color and form in a non-representational way to convey a meaning. Here the idea was to capture a deeper hidden and more intrinsic meaning in a piece of art rather than the mere external manifestations as depicted in the olden era. This further led to an era when the subject matter and the object completely dissolved and the artist only used color, lines or shape to express feelings, emotions, ideas and concepts. Finally we have the postmodern era which includes a wide variety of styles which unite in at least one dimension and that is to transcend the rules of the traditionalistic system.
As I said before creation of Art from the olden days to today has followed certain elements, principles and concepts in a loosely constructed manner. Therefore to understand and appreciate art today it is necessary to further analyze and study the following topics.
Art today: Earlier elements and principles
The earlier elements of art included the line, shape, color and texture which gave the language to the art work through which the idea, the emotions and feelings were conveyed and the principles that were followed included balance, repetition, harmony and symmetry.
Art today: The elements of art today
1. Appropriation
2. Time
3. Space
4. Performance
5. Hybridity
Art today: Concepts
1. Source 2. Object 3. Manipulation 4. Juxtaposition
5. Layering 6. Synthesis of the context and recontextualization 7. Association 8. Fragmentation 9. Culture 10. Installation 11. Boundaries 12. Mixing 13. Sampling
Whatever is the era but there is no denying the fact that every piece of art that is created by the artist tries to capture some meaning for its existence and for this you need content. Here it does not matter the type of materials you have used to create the art work or the form of delivery but what is more important is the fact that can the "piece of art" in whatever form that it has been created hold the attention of the viewer in terms of delivering a robust subject with adequate meaning. Therefore the role of the elements and principles of the art becomes even more important in creating, understanding and appreciating art today.
