Contemporary art
Contemporary art is defined as recently produced visual art. It is a term applied to art produced in the present. Now how present is present? That’s a big question. In fact as per another definition contemporary category art is an all encompassing term that generally includes art work that has been done since the latter part of the 20th Century, after the end of the Modern Era. But again let me clarify that anything that is current can be considered contemporary and it encompasses all art being done now including art from the 1960s or 1970s through the present. Further we need to study in detail the following topics to get a indepth view on the various aspects of the contemporary category art. 1. The institutions of contemporary category art 2. Public attitudes towards contemporary art 3. Concerns related to contemporary art 4. Contemporary category art prizes 5. History of contemporary art which include the periods of 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s Questions on Contemporary art history and writings: The question that always comes into the mind with respect of contemporary art is contemporary to whom or to what? It is a relative term and it is often used to describe any art after the year 1945. But the fact is that majority of people who are alive today were born long after 1945 and so isn’t it quite natural to concede the art of the 40s, 50s, 60s and even the 70s to modernism or in other words "art that is part of our lives to the past" and not the current era. Another question is how to document and write the history of contemporary category art. Is somebody who has lived the period, whom we can call the expert better equipped to handle the history and documentation of contemporary art or is it fine for a person from the new generation to handle the writings of contemporary art just like we have so many writers and historians who write about pre-modern and modern art. Maybe both, as every historical writing and documentation are one among many versions and every history shapes the future histories.
