Date rape

Date rape is one of the many common types of rape that exists today. It refers to forced sexual activity by a person known to the victim and most of the times the perpetuator of such a rape is a casual acquaintance, friend or a boyfriend. It can occur between two people who know each other either platonically or sexually. The female are the victim in majority of the cases and one statistics points out the fact that more than 65% of young women who got raped knew their rapist. They have identified them either as a boyfriend, friend or a casual acquaintance. Date rape can therefore be defined as non-consensual sexual activity which occurs between two people who know each other in some way. It can be either planned or spontaneous in nature. The drug facilitated dates rapes are most of the times pre-planned.

Date rape: Sex that falls somewhere between consent and denial

Sometimes it becomes problematic to define date rape. This is very much true in the case of gray rape which refers to sexual activity which falls between consent and denial. In this kind of scenario often both the parties are unsure of who wanted what. To avoid falling in these messy situations it is better to have a clear understanding and awareness of what is acceptable and what is unacceptable for you as well as the other person in a given situation as well as in a particular relationship.

Date rape: Consumption of intoxicants

Alcohol is one of the biggest intoxicants involved in date rapes. The problem is that alcohol actually alters our normal behaviour. It can make people relaxed with slackened inhibitions; it can dull the sense of the environment and it can make some people very aggressive also. Apart from alcohol, there are many other drugs which are used widely for pre-planned date rape. They include drugs like rohypnol and gamma-hydroxybutyrate. These drugs in common language are known as “roofies” and “GHB” respectively. Ketamine is another drug which is widely used for the purpose of date rape. These drugs get perfectly mixed with drinks and it becomes very difficult to identify them either through taste or odour. These drugs induce a black out phenomenon where the person completely forgets things that happen. People who have unknowingly consumed these drugs have complained later with symptoms ranging from being paralyzed with loss of memory and a blurred vision. When these drugs are mixed with alcohol then their potency and affects become that much more prominent and it can then become lethal also.

Date rape: The do’s and don’ts

The problem with date rape is that it is committed by somebody who is known to the victim and even trusted by the victim at least to some extent. To compound matters date rape can be either spontaneous in occurrence or it can be cunningly planned breaching the basic level of trust and faith that one human being reposes on another. Keeping in mind these facts it becomes important for us to follow certain guidelines so that we don’t find ourselves in any unfortunate circumstances. If you have planned a “date” with somebody then it is better to select open public places like hotels and restaurants for spending time together. This is very important especially if it is a first time date. Avoid all secluded places like the isolated gardens or the rooms which includes your room also. This is an important precaution you must take until you have developed trust for your partner based on experience and bonding developed over a period of time. Always be aware about yourself and the surroundings and be very clear on what you want and what you don’t want. Avoid taking intoxicants on a relatively new date and avoid drinks offered in a dance party or a rave party. Carry your own fluid drink for these parties. Going out with a group of trusted friends to a dance party is always better than going alone with somebody whom you just met. At the party it is better that all friends stay together and have a close watch on each other. If you feel even slightly that you are getting into a threatening situation, ask for immediate help from friends and nearby people. For long term protection join self-defense courses. Learning martial arts can be a good choice. These courses will boost your confidence as they teach you to be in control of yourself as well as fend potential threatening circumstances through mental and physical techniques. They make you sharp, agile and quick and they also help you mount a surprise counterattack on your attacker so that you can get away from the situation unarmed. These days you also get lot of equipments for self protection. For example, the “pepper spray” is a good option for surprise counterattack. Similarly you have many other latest self-protection devices available in the market which can be kept in hand for self protection.

Date rape: What to do if you are injured?

God forbid but if you are already injured then you should also know the next course of action. A rape victim should immediately go to the emergency room of a medical center or a hospital and take the help of doctors and counsellors who have been particularly trained to take care of people who have been raped. Further take the help of your friends and family members. Call them on the first opportunity and narrate the whole thing that has happened. Also if you are absolutely sure that you have been raped then you must report to the police also. Call them right away. It is very important to preserve all the physical evidence. Don’t change your clothes or wash yourself. This can destroy the physical evidence. Also make a point to write down as much as possible about the things that have happened. Remember each event in a chronological order and pen it down. Calling a rape crisis center is a very good option if the victim is totally stunned and paralyzed psychologically and physically after a sexual assault. People and friends who are nearby and readily available should consider this option. The hotline numbers of these centers are available on the local phone book.
