Feminine Archetypes
The term “archetypes” was introduced and popularized by one of the leading psychology thinkers of our times, Carl Jung. Archetypes are patterns of behavior that is universally human and belong to the collective consciousness. They resonate with all of us and are easily identifiable. A feminine archetype is an archetype that models behavior that is easily recognizable among women. The fundamental feminine archetypes can be roughly divided into three categories: Maiden, Mother, and Crone. As you can see, these feminine archetypes can be said to follow the biological life cycle of an average woman. Let us delve into these feminine archetypes in a little more detail. The Maiden archetype is also synonymous with the virgin feminine archetype. This has no bearing on the sexual status or sexual behavior and sometimes is not even a celibate. The virgin archetype can be seen in literature, in our myths and legends, even in women all around us. These are women who choose to be unmarried or stay unmarried because of certain circumstances, but are independent, strong willed, and bold. Their sexuality is wholly in their hands. In a predominantly patriarchal setup, women who lived and reflected the Maiden or Virgin feminine archetype were often condemned and socially boycotted. In this day and age, if a woman choses to follow her own heart and desires and those desires do not include marriage, motherhood, and other concerns traditionally deemed to be feminine, but choses instead to live her life on her own terms, perhaps pursing her passions and career interests, it would be safe to say she is modeling the Maiden/Virgin archetype in her life. The Mother archetype models a behavior that is nurturing, cooperative, and maybe even self-sacrificing for the greater good of the family. A woman who models the mother feminine archetype could also be someone who lavishes a lot of energy and affection on pets, plants, social causes, etc., and does not necessarily have to be married with a family. A very good example of a woman who represented the Mother feminine archetype without being a biological mother herself is Mother Theresa. Even Florence Nightingale falls into this category. The Crone feminine archetype is the woman who is maybe postmenopausal, older, mature, has put behind her childbearing years and responsibilities and now finds herself free to pursue her true heart’s desires, finding a boldness and openness in herself which she may not have known existed before! This is the feminine archetype that is more comfortable with herself and her place in society. Article by Karishma J.
