Feminist Philosophy

Feminist philosophy is a vast subject that would be of interest to all women who like to introspect on the history and progress of the feminist movement. It can be argued that not all feminists are philosophers and not all philosophers are feminists. However, the proponents of feminist philosophy have tried to rework traditional philosophy to include the feminist viewpoint and feminist ideology.

Within the realms of feminist philosophy itself, there have been arguments and counter-arguments among feminists. Some feminists felt that the method of philosophical inquiry and research so far has had far too many aggressive overtones, which reminded them of a patriarchal mindset. This argument was criticized by certain others who raised the valid point as to aggression has always been thought of as a male characteristic, as it is an emotion that is equally present in women as well!

Some of the most well-known voices of feminist philosophy are Simone de Beauvoir, Mary Wollstonecraft, Judith Butler, and Mary Daly. Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex is a seminal book in the history of feminist philosophy. In it, she argues that a woman is a human being first and foremost, and only later grows into the characteristics that society deems feminine, through a process of social and familial conditioning. She believed that women had the capability in them to change the circumstances of their life through their own choices. On the other hand, Mary Wollstonecraft's feminist philosophy was that man was the ideal that women should aspire for and as such, relegated women to a subordinate position.

Within the framework of feminist philosophy, there exist Marxist/socialist feminists who believed that economic dependence was the root cause of women's oppression. This led liberal feminists to espouse a feminist philosophy that called for equal economic, financial, educational and workplace opportunities for women. However, postmodern feminist philosophy recognizes that the problems facing women are diverse and so solutions can never be homogenous.
