Feminist theory
Feminist theory is the study of gender inequality and ways to eradicate it to bring about a more balanced society. Feminist theory covers a wide variety of fields like social, economical, political, educational, anthropological, familial, etc. Feminist theory also analyses and promotes women’s rights and issues. The study and propagation of feminist theory started as early as the 18th century and has grown in strength since then. One of the earliest exponents of feminist theory was Susan B. Anthony, who was arrested for illegally voting in the 1870s in the United States of America. She protested the denial of women basic rights like voting, property ownership, or autonomy in marriage. Sojourner Truth is another woman who also raised vital issues of women’s equality through her various publications, around the same time period, and is considered an early exponent of feminist theory. Simone de Beauvoir’s book, The Second Sex, published in 1949, was a watershed in the history of feminist theory. She strove for the understanding and recognition that women are human beings first, and then only does gender come into play. Much of feminist theory stems from Freudian psychology. According to this, gender identity is not biological, but an offshoot of childhood experiences, or social and familial conditioning. Co-educational schooling was thought to be an answer to this, as it would help to eradicate gender-specific conditioned behaviors. One of the major issues that has been studied and analyzed in feminist theory is the unrecognized and unremunerated work that women do in the course of domestic work and reproduction. Betsy Warrior’s The Houseworker’s Handbook criticizes how this unpaid labor by women that includes housework, childcare, and care of the senior members of the family, that many a time takes up the whole life of women, is not validated and leads to the economic deprivation and dependence of women later in life. The study of feminist theory has led to many movements across the world to raise an awareness of the need to have women adequately and respectfully compensated for their work and the need for a dignified, independent life for everyone.
