Global Feminism

Global Feminism is also known as Transnational Feminism, World Feminism, and International Feminism. Global feminism is the movement for women’s rights on a global scale. It is a feminist movement that was started in the postcolonial era.

Global feminism is a direct fight against outdated models of behavior that are the hangovers from a colonial, patriarchal mindset. One of the examples of the causes taken on by global feminism was in Spain, in the Islamic societies of Mudejar. In the late 13th century, in these societies, if a woman was found to have sexual relationships with Christian men, she could either be punished under the Islamic law called Sunna, or she could be sold as a slave in order to “escape” the aforementioned punishment. Either way, women were trapped and tormented for exercising their sexual freedom.

Global feminism transcends boundaries of race, caste, creed, ethnicity, geopolitical boundaries, and class. Although women’s issues and concerns cut across all of these, it is a known fact that cultural and ethnic factors play a major role in discrimination against women and such local factors throw up different challenges for different women. As such, global feminism not only deals with the universal challenges faced by women because of patriarchal social establishments, but also the local and specific challenges thrown up by such systems.

Across different societies, equality means different things to different women. For some, it might mean basic issues like access to nutrition, healthcare, drinking water, while for others, it could mean the right to education, job opportunities, freedom over the choice of clothing, movement, life partners, etc. Global feminism, as a movement, aims to address all these issues, across all spectrums, to reach a harmonious and unifying consensus.
