The Greek Goddess of the Earth
The Greek Goddess of the Earth, otherwise called Gaia, is the primordial mother Goddess. According to Greek mythology, she did not have a “conventional” birth. The Greek Goddess of the Earth came into being just as Chaos receded. The similarity between this and the Big Bang theory is quite apparent. In ancient times, she was often worshipped in the open or in caves. According to Greek mythology, the spouse of the Greek Goddess of the Earth was Uranus, who she had brought into being from her own body. The children from this union were considered to be the Gods of Heaven. The Greek Goddess of the Earth later went on to have other mates. Her union with Pontos brought forth the sea Gods and her union with Tartaros brought on the Gigantes, and all mortal beings were from her own flesh. The Greek Goddess of the Earth is said to be the original Spirit behind the Oracle at Delphi. Like ancient Greek religion, many Neopagan religions also center around the mother Goddess, like Wicca, for example. There are many who consider the three primary female archetypes of the Maiden, Mother, and Crone to be derivatives of Gaia, or the Greek Goddess of the Earth. This belief in the earth being a womanly deity was not restricted to ancient Greece. We see reverberations of the Greek Goddess of the Earth in ancient Rome, in India, ancient Middle-East, Sumerian mythology, and even in German, Irish, South American, Mexican and Pacific Island mythologies. It is worth noting here that the name given to the Greek Goddess of the Earth, Gaia, and the name given in Hinduism to the mother of all creation, Gayatri, are phonetically similar! In Buddhism too, there is a mother deity of the earth, called Bhumi.
