Greek Mother of Earth

The Greek Mother of Earth is also called Gaia or Gaea. It is believed that she appeared out of Chaos and was later populated by flora and fauna. Most of the creation myths surrounding the Greek Mother of Earth shows that not only is her birth parthenogenic, but all that arose out of her were from parthogenic births as well (ie., requiring only one parent). Significantly, she was thought to have given birth to Erichthonius, who was the founder of Athens.

The Greek Mother of Earth is also the first Greek God (or Goddess). For the ecologically conscious in the modern day word, she signifies earth’s ecosystem. The Gaia hypothesis is a famous theory, centering around the Greek Mother of Earth, that was postulated in the 1960s by James Lovelock. He thought of all living things on earth and earth itself as a single conscious entity called Gaia. It follows that respect to Gaia, or the Greek Mother of Earth, leads to universal balance and harmony that directly benefits the well being of all human beings, while anything that leads to an imbalance in the ecosystem can cause catastrophic ramifications to us as well. So an awareness of the Earth as having a consciousness, by whatever name you call it, leads to greater respect and handling of the earth’s resources.

The Greek Mother of Earth consciousness is considered to be feminine, nurturing, and healing. Even now, many Neopagan religions worship the Greek Mother of Earth, as Gaia, like Wicca, for example. The Greeks like to believe that an oath taken upon the name of the Greek Mother of Earth was the most powerful. Her sacred animals are the bull, serpent, bees, and pig. It is believed that in her hands, the narcotic poppy can be transformed to a pomegranate.
