Hip hop fashion
Hip hop fashion can be said as a unique and distinctive kind of dress style originating with the African-American and Latino youth in America from the early 1980s till now. Hip hop style of fashion is part of the hip hop culture which is primarily driven by the hip hop music which includes the rap music and dance. Hip hop fashion: Hip hop's building blocks As I said before, Hip hop is in fact a entire culture which involves music as the prime driver. Hip hop developed in 1970s and early 1980s from four elements that is tagging, b-boying, Djing and rapping. Among the four "rap" is now more acceptable and widely known. Hip hop fashion: Apparels and Accessories Big glasses, many rings, sneakers with ‘phat’ shoelaces, big gold necklaces and jewellery are common fashion statements of hip hop. Haircuts like Jheri curls and hi-top fade were very famous in 1980s. Dreadlocks as hair style, African chain and black-green & red hip cloths were also seen in this period. 1990s witnessed the bright coloured cloths and the baseball cloths. Street gang dress codes and baggy pants with no belts made their appearance in 1990s. Hooded cloths, Timberland boots, big flannel shirts and converse sneakers were all part of the hip hop fashion in this period. Gold and gold jewellery was especially liked and gold teeth fashion was seen. Mid 90s saw the arrival of hats and alligator skin shoes. By the end of 1990s we had shiny flashy suits, platinum jewellery and platinum teeth. On the other hand female hip hop fashion included shiny and couture apparels. Today hip hop apparels and accessories are part of a larger "hip hop style" fashion industry with big time companies involved in the whole business. Hip hop fashion for women has moved away from a “tomboyish look” to a “feminine look" which is sexy and powerful. The feminine hip hop gear include slim pants, short low waist skirts with leggings and boots, low waist jeans and tight singlets clinging to the chest. The idea is to portray feminine sensuality and sexuality and therefore accessories like beaded jewellery also are helpful. The glam look is not complete without heavy makeup including prominent lip-gloss. Further to understand hip hop fashion in detail we need to have a detailed study of all related topics so that we can thoroughly analyze the influence of hip hop culture especially hip hop music on the development of hip hop style of fashion.
