Learning organization

The genesis of the learning organization that shall be engaged in path breaking cardiovascular research will be based on three major core capabilities.

1. Creative Orientation
2. Generative Conversation
3. Dealing with Complexity or Systemic perspective

The organization will keep a creative orientation towards all the major initiatives it takes with an ability to generate something new out of every creative pursuit that it engages in. This means that the learning organization will focus on path breaking cardiovascular research for discovery of novel therapeutic interventions in cardiac medicine. To deal with the complexity involved in cutting edge research in cardiovascular medicine the learning organization will practice the fundamentals of systems thinking and systems biology.

The major disciplines that will be employed by the learning organization as its "core management philosophy" are the disciplines of Personal mastery, Mental Models, Systems Thinking, Team Learning and Building Shared Vision.

Learning organization: The discipline of Personal Mastery

The essence of the discipline of personal mastery lays in understanding the purpose of our “being” and engaging in the practice of generativeness and connectedness for achieving the purpose of our “being”. The principle behind personal mastery involve in setting a vision and reaching the vision through creative tension. Further it also involves the capacity to be persistent with one’s set vision and not lowering it under any circumstances because of emotional tension. It is also relates to the human capacity to open up the vastness of the subconscious mind to carry out complex functions. The practice of the discipline of personal mastery involves in clarifying one’s personal vision, pursue it by holding on with creative tension and achieve the vision by focusing on results. It also involves the practice of seeing the current realities and making choices to achieve the desired results.

Learning organization: The discipline of Mental Models

The essence of the discipline of constructing mental models is love of truth in all matters and an approach of openness with knowing the truth as the supreme requirement. The principle of the discipline of mental models include looking into an espoused theory Vs the theory-in-use with a balance of inquiry and advocacy and establishing a ladder of inference for the best solutions available. The practice of this discipline involves distinguishing data from abstractions based on data, testing assumptions and employing tools like left-hand column to understand what we say and what we actually think about a given situation.

Learning organization: The discipline of Systems Thinking

The essence of the discipline of systems thinking is holism and interconnectedness which works with a belief that everything can be constructed and interconnected to obtain a holistic view of the situation. The principles of the discipline of systems thinking include understanding facts such as structure influences behavior and every structure offers a policy of resistance. Further the principles of this discipline help us to understand that the behavior leading to resistance can be altered if we can find suitable leverage to address the structure. Practice of this discipline include understanding the basic systems archetypes which can explain the functioning of virtually every structure and employing simulation tools to understand the functioning of specific systems archetypes involved in a particular system.

Learning organization: The discipline of Team Learning

The essence of team learning lays in tapping the collective intelligence of the team by aligning the team towards common goals and vision. The principles of team learning include integration of dialogue & discussion for arriving at common understandings for action. Further it also includes the understanding and removal of the defensive routines that are part of individuals and teams. The practice of the discipline of team learning include making conscious effort in suspending our partial assumptions about a situation or an individual, working and acting as colleagues within a team, bringing up and surfacing up our defensiveness for finding solutions to them and implementing the discipline of team learning again and again in our day to day activities.

Learning organization: The discipline of Building Shared Vision

The essence of building a shared vision lays in our ability to find the commonality of purpose in what we do and thus establish partnerships based on a common and shared purpose. The principles of this discipline include looking the shared vision as a “Hologram” where every individual sees a piece of the shared vision though his window of understanding. It also includes true commitment by all individuals towards the purpose and vision of the organization with an understanding that true commitment is far better than following orders based on blind compliance. The practice of the discipline of shared vision include establishing a visioning process that believes in sharing of the actual visioning process, listening to others in formulating the vision and allowing freedom of choice to follow a vision. Further it also involves in acknowledging the current reality and understanding the gap that exists between the vision and the current reality. This will help in formulating action plans that will bridge the gap between the current reality and the vision.
