Marriage ceremony words

Marriage ceremony words are the cornerstone of the Christian wedding ceremony. Traditionally, the marriage ceremony words were sacrosanct and rarely modified. Modern-day brides and grooms, however, like to put their own spin on the marriage ceremony words and often have them modified and personalized.

There are mostly three basic formats for marriage ceremony words. These are the question and answer format, the responsive format, and the custom format. In the question and answer format, usually the clergy who is officiating asks a question of the bride and groom, to which each individually responds. The responsive format is one in which the bride and groom repeats the marriage ceremony words after the officiant recites them. The custom vow is the truly individualized one, in which the marriage ceremony words are written beforehand by the groom and bride and usually takes the form of a love letter or promises made to each other, and these are recited by the bride and groom in front of the officiant and witnesses.

Whatever format the marriage ceremony words take, the pure essence of what the words imply are the same. These usually are promises to stick with each other through good times or bad, prosperity or poverty, sickness or health, adversity or abundance. Also, the marriage ceremony words reflect the bride and groom's love and respect for each other, their intention to trust, honor and cherish the other, their vow to encourage, support and understand each other. The traditional marriage ceremony words are as follows:

I, (Name),Take you, (Name),To be my (wife/husband);To have and to hold,From this day forward,For better, for worse,For richer, for poorer,In sickness and in health,To love and to cherish,'Till death do us part." (or, "As long as we both shall live.)

Whatever the marriage ceremony words maybe, the ultimate challenge lies in being true to them and remembering them through thick and thin!
