Matriarchies in mythology
Whether there were matriarchal societies in the past is a much debated issue amongst anthropologists and sociologists. However, matriarchies in mythology have abounded and are common across borders. Most famously, the Amazon society and those in Spanish and South American cultures have captured popular imagination through the ages. Bertha Diener is known for her work on matriarchies in mythology. She believed that all human settlements were matriarchal in the past and later evolved or degenerated (depending on individual perspective) to patriarchal societies. However, there is no concrete proof that the status of women was better in the matriarchies in mythology. The story of the Amazon society, for example, was narrated by Greek writers. This is one of the predominant matriarchies in mythology, where the women were pictured as warriors, strong and big built, and living on the edges of distant lands. Herodotus pictured them as hunting on horsebacks with their husbands and wearing the same dress as men. Apparently, the Amazon women were not allowed to wed until they killed a man in battle. Among the matriarchies in mythology, many Neolithic societies in Europe had matriarchal attributes. It can be postulated that most of the Neopagan, Wiccan, and agrarian communities of the past may have been matriarchal, although there is no conclusive evidence for this. Most of the matriarchies in mythology arise from Greek mythology, Gaia being the Mother Goddess and the first and primordial deity.
