Modern feminism
Gender feminism is the essence of modern feminism. It coincides with the second wave of feminism beginning in 1960s and is known to have existed till the early part of the third wave of feminism corresponding to the period of early 1990s. The major issues that were under focus included gender based inequalities and gender based discrimination. Modern feminist thought looked at the cultural and political inequalities that existed in the "patriarchal and sexist structure of power" in the society and encouraged women to understand how these inequalities affected their day to day personal life.
Modern feminism emphasized strongly that how the system causes women to completely lose their personal identity in that of their family and how women are socially and culturally pushed towards an existence that requires them to identify and find meaning to their lives through their husbands and children.
Further to understand Modern feminist thought in detail we need to study the following topics in depth
1. Second wave feminism
2. Women’s liberation in the USA
3. The feminine mystique
Modern feminism worked with the existentialist view on women which establishes the argument that “one is not born a woman, but becomes one" and thus the focus is on the social and cultural construction of women by the system. According to this thinking the social and cultural construction of women tying her to "gender specific roles" defined by the society is the reason for oppression of women.
