Nutritional health supplements

Nutritional health supplements provide nutrients that are required for your body in a balanced way. The biggest source of nutritional health supplements is the balanced diet consisting of food articles which provides the essential nutrients to the body like the carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and dietary fibers in a required amount. Nutrients are vital for our survival as they provide nourishment to the cells, tissues, organs and systems of our body. They are the basic constituents which act as the energy source as well as the building blocks and facilitators of the body system. Diet is what we eat and as I said before a balanced diet provides most of the nutrients that we require for the body. Therefore I once again reemphasize the fact that balanced diet is the best source of nutritional health supplements that is required by the body. We must understand the fact that poor diet can have injurious consequences on our health, causing deficiency diseases such as scurvy, beriberi, and kwashiorkor; health-threatening conditions like obesity and metabolic syndrome, and such common chronic systemic diseases as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis.

To live a healthy and fit life we need to have a balanced diet as well as a systematic exercise regimen for the body. It would be wise to take professional advice to plan a lifelong fitness regimen including balanced diet that can keep us fit and active. Professionals like doctors, fitness trainers and dieticians can play a major role in planning a suitable fitness program. Further for planning a proper and balanced diet the role of dieticians, doctors and trainers are paramount as they help in proper management of the economics of human nutrition. They are trained to provide safe, evidence based dietary advice to individuals and their help should be taken before commencing any ambitious health and fitness regimens. So the message that I want to convey here is that the best source for nutritional health supplements is the balanced diet and a balanced diet along with activity of the body and mind can help us to live a healthy and fit life. Further it is important to have professional advice regarding our diet and workout program before we engage in any fitness or healthy weight loss program. Now let us also discuss something about the classes of nutrients that should become part of our balanced diet and nutrition.

Nutritional health supplements: Classes of nutrients that should be part of a balanced diet

The nutrients that we get from our food can be classified into seven major groups. These include the carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fiber and most essentially water. These nutrients can be put into two classes depending upon the amount that is required. The macronutrients are nutrients that are required in larger amount and these include the carbohydrates, fats, fiber, protein and water. The micronutrients are nutrients which are required in lesser quantity and they are the vitamins and minerals. Energy for body is measured in Kilocalories and in general terms is called as Calories and is denoted with a capital C. Some of the macronutrients act as the main source of energy for the body and these are the carbohydrates, fats and proteins. We should also be aware of the fact that carbohydrates are largest source for energy for the body and they provide the most easily available form of energy. Though fats provide 9 calories per gram and carbohydrates and proteins provide 4 calories per gram, the most readily available form of energy comes from the carbohydrates. Therefore we must understand the fact that for immediate energy requirement carbohydrates are the best source. On the other hand proteins have very important role in muscle building as well as cell membrane synthesis inside the body. Fats also are required in moderate amount for essential functions of the body. But any extra fat that we take from outside tends to get stored in the adipose tissue in the stubborn parts of our body. This can be unhealthy for us and can lead to overweight, obesity and related cardiovascular and metabolic disorders in extreme conditions. This is also true for carbohydrates and proteins. If we consume more carbohydrates and proteins than that is required by the body then they are ultimately converted to fats inside the body and stored in the adipose tissues.

Now coming to the micronutrients, the vitamins and minerals are the most important micronutrients that are required by the body. They are required in lesser quantities but are vital for health and life. For the normal functioning of our cells, tissues and organ systems vitamins and minerals of various types are highly essential. Further minerals of various types act as the building blocks of our body parts. For example calcium is a mineral that is a major part of our bones. Other micronutrients that need a mention here include the antioxidants and the phytochemicals. They are scavengers and removers of free radicals in the body which can damage our cells, tissues, organs and body system. Some of the micronutrients are required on a regular basis and some are required less frequently but any imbalance of these micronutrients in a major way can cause poor health and disease conditions. With this discussion we have now understood the requirement of a balanced diet consisting of both macronutrients as well as micronutrients. Any imbalance in them can lead to conditions like overweight and obesity in one end and underweight and malnutrition on the other end.

Nutritional health supplements: Is there a requirement of additional nutritional health supplements apart from a balanced diet?

If you ask my opinion then I would say that there is no extra need for additional nutritional health supplements apart from having a balanced diet. A balanced diet is the best source of nutritional health supplements. But if you feel that you are not able to stick to a balanced diet then you can take professional opinion from your doctor, your dietician and your personal trainer. They are the best people to provide a suggestion for extra nutritional health supplements. Now the question is that how can you judge whether you are having a balanced diet or not? I would say that you are not having a balanced diet when you are not eating the way that you are supposed to eat as per the diet program that you have committed to in the first place. If you are skipping meals more often then again you are not meeting your balanced diet criteria. If you are not able to have wide variety of food articles from different food sources then again there are chances that your diet is not balanced. Further if your food source is made up of refined artificially cooked stuff and junk food and you have an overall unhealthy lifestyle then again you might be on the wrong side of a balanced diet.

Moreover the “hard truth” that we have to accept is that even the natural food sources that we have today are produced from “the soil types” that are in fact completely depleted of the minerals and other nutrient sources. These “soil types” are very poor in nutrient and mineral resources as compared to say the “soil types” that existed 100 years back. So under these circumstances even a balanced diet comprising of vegetables, fruits, cereals and pulses among other things may not provide us the required nutrition. Under these circumstances you may probably think about going for additional nutritional health supplements. Here in my opinion, whole food nutritional health supplements can be a good source for compensating the nutrition gap that exists in our food because of nutritionally inferior quality of food in today’s times. The whole food nutritional health supplements can also help you protect your body from toxic factors that are synthesized in your body as well those that you are exposed from outside. This benefit is seen because these whole food nutritional supplements contain food based antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and phytonutrients in a high quantity. But as I said before, nothing can replace a balanced diet and if you want to make a choice of additional nutritional health supplements then take advice from professionals and then decide the things based on a proper plan. I would like to end this note with a word of caution that under no circumstances it is advisable to start something of your own without taking a professional opinion. That can be more damaging in the long run than being helpful.
