Political empowerment of women
Political empowerment of women, who make up almost half the population, has been on the agenda of every political party. Towards this end, many measures have been implemented, such as reservation for women in the democratic processes from the grassroots level to the parliamentary stage. However, for true political empowerment of women to take place, the real transformation has to be in the minds of the people, especially men. A cursory glance at the political histories of various countries show that women who have exerted political influence have either been from the elite classes or have been wives, daughters, sisters, etc., of men who have held political offices. Political empowerment of women at the grassroots level is still a mirage as most women who are in politics are reduced to mere rubber stamps by their husbands or fathers or are just stand-ins for them. For generations, women are subjected to social and familial conditioning, to make their families the sole focus of their lives. It is a well known fact that women are left unappreciated and unpaid for the time and energy they spend in domestic activities, from childcare to housework. As such, her time and energies are severely limited when it comes to actively participating in public life. For political empowerment of women to happen, this scenario has to change, perhaps with better support from her family or better understanding from society. Spreading awareness about the unique talents and abilities that a woman possesses, which can bring about radical changes in the establishment, raising education levels, and making sure that a certain percentage of seats are reserved for women at both the grassroots and parliamentary levels can go a long way in ensuring political empowerment of women. It is equally imperative to educate women about the democratic and electoral processes of the country, if they are to be truly empowered. The electoral supervisory body also has to take note of the difficulties women face in coming into public life politically and take measures to eradicate such roadblocks. Political empowerment of women will become a reality when women are groomed from a very early age and given exposure to the various political processes, by staging mock parliaments, etc., in schools and colleges. If women actively come onto the political stage and wield their inimitable power and compassion, there is no doubt that revolutionary strides can take place in every country in the world. Ultimately, political empowerment of women is of benefit to everyone! Article by Karishma J.
