The great Kali

The great Kali is the loving “god mother” to her children. The great mother keeps her beloved children on her lap and close to her breast. On the other hand she is also the destructor of illusions, delusions and the ego. Anybody with a slightest of the ego trembles in front of the goddess and runs for shelter but with no avail.

The great Kali: Kali and the eternal game of "hide and seek"

The great mother plays with her children the game of "hide and seek" and her children enjoy the game to the core. Sitting on mother Kali’s lap her children wait to see when the great mother opens her eyes. In such anticipation the children close their eyes and go to sleep and then the great mother opens her eyes and lovingly looks at her children. Though the eyes shut the children feel a lightning jolt in their consciousness when the divine mother looks at them with such intensity. Immediately the children open their eyes but only find mother Kali with closed eyes. Wide range of emotions encompasses “the beloved children of the mother” as they beg to mother Kali to look at them again. The mother smiles but keeps her eyes shut. Then suddenly without any forewarning the mother looks straight into her children’s eyes just for a second.

The great Kali: The momentary glance and the eternal truth

This momentary glance of mother goddess opens up the eternal truth in front of her children and at once they realize the secrets of the whole universe. From then on the life of her children changes forever. They realize the truth of existence and death and they lose all fear and all feelings of restrictions even though they continue to life a mortal life. Blessed are the children whom the great kali decides to look at, as through this divine happening these children of the mother realize their life’s vision and focus all their energies towards realizing that vision.

The great Kali: Nature joins the play

Not only that but something more happens to her blessed children and that is something very lovely. The “whole nature” comes back to the blessed children of mother kali. The river, the mountains, the birds, the animals, the children, the people and all forces of nature come to them and “celebrate” the realization of the eternal truth.

The great Kali: Finding life's purpose through Kali

One look from mother kali is enough to change everything in our life. Thereafter we are always on her lap and we can feel the warmth of her breasts. Through the eternal play of hide-and-seek we realize her to be part of our very own existence. In fact the play of the great Kali continues and she carries us towards our life’s purpose and offers us the ultimate bliss of salvation and merger with her. Once we are part of the eternal play with the god mother we become consciously aware of our destiny and actively seek her to even change our destiny so that we can achieve the ultimate path of liberation with her blessings and active help. Traversing through this path we realize that godmother Kali will not leave us anymore and we will be not able to exist without her anymore. The bond get’s cemented for eternity. Everything we do becomes an offering to her and every path we choose is through her conscious awareness and blessing. So when her eyes are shut mother Kali is asking us to seek her and when her eyes are open she is making us to be aware of the reality that she has always been with us and she will be always “be there” for us. The eternal play of hide-and-seek is the game of love by which the great mother takes us through the journey of life which we have dedicated to her in the first place.

The Great Kali: The supreme manifestation of nature

Apart from seeking her love as “mother goddess’ we can call her for our rescue and help as the supreme manifestation of nature. When we invoke her in this way she takes form and shape of the primordial warrior goddess for the spiritual warfare of existence. In this form she gives all the strength to defeat the extreme negative forces deep within our internal universe as well as that exists in the external universe which tends to become a barrier to our life's progress towards liberation.

The great Kali: Invoking the primordial goddess

We can invoke her daily in our mediation with a unified focus of our conscious, subconscious and superconscious mind. We can mediate her in the following way.

“When the night is the darkest, when the stars are all but hidden, when there is a brief silence before the storm, I walk in the darkness to the field of the death. I see the dance of death and the fire of the pyres all around me. I sit in the center of this field of death and meditate on the great Kali to manifest in her abundant form. She surely listens to me and with love she comes. The darkest of the clouds surround the skies and there is the sudden lightning and thunder which shakes my spine. Every hair on my body stands upright as the roaring whirling wind passes the field of the death. Million souls of the dead accumulate in the field signalling the beginning of the dance of the dead. The mighty sea becomes restless, the moon hides away in the darkness and the lull of the night gives way to a storm of unbelievable proportions. Nature goes mad with frenzy, all feeble hide in fear and I sit still waiting for the arrival of the great goddess. The goddess arrives in splendour. The dark mother dancing her death dance and laughing uncontrollably launches herself onto me. She looks dark, fearsome and menacing. She looks at me and consumes me totally. My existence does not mean anything now as I am part of her and she is part of me. I transcend death to take rebirth. I awaken to true life to see through the great mother’s purpose that is so well defined for me. I become Kali and she becomes me.

The Great Kali: The loving mother and the goddess of death

The great Kali is loving as well as terrible. She seems terrible to the ego as she destroys the ego to love you forever. She is in fact the one that gives birth to all. Nothing ever existed without her will and nothing shall exist without her will. She destroys the army of mind born delusions and elusions. She strikes terror to our bound, limited and contracted ego. The ego trembles with fear and runs for shelter as it sees the coal-black, sword-wielding, blood-smeared dancer of death and destruction. But there is no escape. The ego will be destroyed to pieces. The ego will be totally consumed by the dark goddess. Once the ego dies there is rebirth in the form of the “divine self”. For some this happens in one lifetime and for some it may take many life times. The choice is within us to embrace the goddess now or run from her and eventually fall at her feet anyway. For the initiated, who have taken rebirth as the divine self, she appears as the supremely beautiful, beloved, dear spouse, performing a ballet of incomparable grace, overwhelming them with love.

The great Kali: The Goddess who is beyond our imaginations

The Great Kali is the goddess who is beyond our imaginations and she can never be understood by the mind alone. The essence of what she symbolizes is beyond the mind. If we try to understand her just through the mind we may end up in the dark and we may end up going no further. To know the great Kali and walk the path of Kali we need to transcend our sense of individual self and unify our mind, body, heart, soul and the external universe. Only through this unification of our internal and external universe we can think about plunging into the unknown and seek Goddess Kali in her luscious, radiant and black form. Once we start swimming in the vastness of the unknown we lose our fear of existence and death and we start recognizing the overwhelming mystery of the goddess. Such surrender to her eventually allows us to totally dissolve in her velvety midnight embrace. This would be the most cherished movement when by her grace we may know the unutterable truth of her love, even as we are annihilated by her infinitude.

The great Kali: Meditating the goddess

We need to mediate on her with our conscious, subconscious and superconscious mind in unification with our body, heart and soul. We can use any method we please and even breathing her name day and night will awaken her in our inner self. Her awakening is the signal of our higher rising. At this juncture we can see the play of the cosmic mother. We can listen to her whispering which says to us in a loving tone that she is behind everything that is alive and dead, innate and living. We are made aware by her that all the sounds of the universe originate from her and finishes in her. We are made aware that she is omnipresent and omnipotent and in fact every letter of the alphabet constitutes her intuitive wisdom and the whole universe worships her and prostrates in front of her. In this way we become bound to goddess kali and she becomes bound to us. We bound her hands and feet with adamantine strands of pure love.

The Great Kali: The Mantra Om Kali Ma

The mantra of goddess kali, "Om kali ma" is the vehicle which can be used to reach her domain during meditation. Whatever is the form of the meditation and whatever be the form of calling, reciting the simple Kali mantra will transfer us to the higher awakening and to her universe. The “Om Kali ma” mantra will raise us to her world as well as make her enter into us through every possible route including the mind, the heart, the blood, the breath and the soul. At this level she becomes us and we become her. This is the time when we witness her divine dance and we hear the divine tunes of her singing. We experience the eternal truth and transcend the world of the living as well as the dead to reach the world of nowhereness and nothingness. The realization of the eternal truth helps us to overcome the brutalities and limitations of life and death. At this juncture we lose the fear of the great Kali and no longer restrict our vision to a narrow form of the mother where she is depicted as simple, predictable, easily appreciated, sweetly divine demure goddess who is lovely to look at and who is full of engendering kindness. Instead we love to see her parade forth in gruesome reality, unabashed in her ways, unleashing her limitless creative power, thrilling the mind and body with overwhelming sensual delights, propelling the spirit into awe-inspiring transcendent domains and crushing us in her jaws of time, decay and suffering. In fact we beg to mother Kali to show us her terrible form as we are no longer afraid to know the eternal truth and we know what is that is beyond her dance of death. We need to understand that only by appreciating and loving every form of mother Kali we can think of achieving true liberation.
