The rights of the girl child

The rights of the girl child has been recognized and debated endlessly. UNICEF determines that the rights of the girl child include equal opportunities to education, healthcare, and livelihood. Unfortunately, it is the case that unless more is done to increase social awareness, the rights of the girl child to have a life as good as the one enjoyed by boys will remain a distant dream.

In many developing countries, dowry and child marriages make a mockery of the rights of the girl child. The other obstacles to the rights of the girl child being a reality are poverty, illiteracy, malnutrition, and infant mortality, even female infanticide. In India, girls are provided free primary school education for girls till they turn 14 years of age. But enrollment in schools is still on the lower end of the spectrum for girls.

In order to give girl children a safer environment even before they are born, sex determination tests are banned in India, in hopes of lowering the rates of female foeticide. But unscrupulous medical personnel find loopholes and still find a way to provide sex determination tests to parents who ask for it.

Apart from organizations like the UNICEF, there are several private organizations too, like Girls Inc., that advocate the rights of the girl child. Among the many rights listed are the rights to be themselves and resist gender stereotypes, to express their originality and enthusiasm, to take risks, to accept and appreciate their bodies, to prepare for interesting work and economic independence.
