Traditional marriage vows

Marriage vows are an intrinsic and profound part of the wedding ceremony. Traditional marriage vows are now being replaced by marriage vows that have been written personally by the bride and groom themselves, thus giving it a very heartwarming touch. These marriage vows are solemn promises made to each other, that are meant to last a lifetime, so are not meant to be taken lightly!

Most marriage vows are promises to respect, love, and cherish each other through the ups and downs of life. In traditional Christian marriage vows, the bride and groom promise to respect each other through successes and failures, look after each other through sickness and health, to support each other through prosperity or poverty, and to grow together, loving each other every step of the way.

In traditional Hindu marriage vows, the bride and groom circle a ring of fire seven times, signifying seven different things. These are, to work for the prosperity of the family, to develop mentally, spiritually, and physically together, to work for right livelihood, to acquire happiness, harmony, and knowledge, to have children, to work towards self control of mind, body, and soul, and to stay true and loyal to each other.

Traditionally, Muslim marriages do not have marriage vows, but rather a reading of the Koran by the priest, followed by asking consent for the wedding from the groom and bride.

In nondenominational or civil weddings, marriage vows are either written personally by the bride or groom or taken from various denominations. Sometimes, these are taken from the religions of both the groom and bride, so that it becomes the best of both worlds! No matter what the religion or circumstance of the wedding, marriage vows are a beautiful way for a couple to reiterate their love and commitment to each other.
