Venus
Goddess Venus is the goddess of love and beauty. She was the Roman Goddess of love and is synonymous with the Greek Goddess of love and fertility i.e. Aphrodite. Her symbol is a hand mirror. As the Goddess of love and fertility she was revered as the ancestor of the Roman people. Many of her attributes including her power of fertility actually originate from the Greek Goddess of love, beauty and fertility i.e. Aphrodite. In fact the origin of the Goddess of love is quite ancient and is associated with the Semitic Goddess of love Ishtar/Astarte. Some of the attributes of Goddess Venus are quite different from the Greek Goddess Aphrodite. Aphrodite was known to be quite liberal in the matters of love and sexuality whereas Venus though she had numerous love affairs and associations was revered as the Goddess of chastity. In fact she takes more mature role with her being worshiped as the mother, the bringer of good fortune, bringer of victory and also as the protector of feminine chastity. She was also associated with nature especially with the arrival of spring and therefore she was also the Goddess of joy.
As she is synonymous to Goddess Aphrodite her birth stories are similar with one story attributing her birth form Uranus and the other from Zeus. Most of her portraits and sculptures are related to her association with nature and therefore they are more often seen nude or scantly clothed. The statues of frescos are the examples. One of her famous carvings is Venus de Milo at Louvre. Curiously one of the hands in this sculpture is broken from the ancient times itself. The oldest festivals celebrated in her name dates back to 293 B.C. Two of the main festivals celebrated by the Romans in her name were known as Vinalia Rustica and Vinalia Priora.
The name of Goddess Venus has been given to the second planet in distance from the Sun. This association might have been made because of the brilliant appearance of this planet in the sky welcoming both the dawn and the dusk. This was in fact the brightest of the planets known to the ancient people. It is a planet which is the most beautiful celestial object next to only the Sun and the Moon and therefore it was natural to be named after the Goddess of love, beauty and fertility.
Originally the Greeks got confused and thought that the bright planet was in fact two, one that is seen in the eastern skies at the times of dawn and one that is seen in the western skies at the time of dusk and sunset. But latter they learned that it was just a single planet and they named it after Aphrodite. Later the Romans changed the name to Venus.
Scientifically speaking planet Venus has similar size, mass and density as that of earth but the atmosphere is completely different with upper clouds of poisonous sulphuric acid swirling in a pattern of yellowish mist on the planet. These swirls move around with a speed of more than three times of any winds in a hurricane that is seen on earth and they race around the planet once every four days. Beneath the acid cloud is a planet with one of the most hostile terrains with lightning and thunder flashing and booming across a rainless sky day and night. Further the atmosphere is very dense and the pressure is very high.
Venus controls the realm of love and the emotions and she has a strong influence on our relationships with others. Our romantic lives and our attraction and selection of a mate are under the influence of this planet as per astrological traditions. The strength and weakness of relationships, the harmony and disharmony in relationships, the breaking and making of relationships can be predicted by ascertaining the position of this planet in a natal chart.
Venus also determines how you experience good feelings, how you experience and share beauty and she acts as your guide by making you express your innermost feelings, emotions and passions. Through the eyes of Venus we can see the poignancy and the color of life and further she plays a great role in helping us to express the beauty of life and nature through our vivid imaginations and fantasy. In fact she is the chief patroness for the expression of creativity and imagination in any art form.
Further to understand in depth the significance of her manifestation we need to analyze and study the following topics in depth
