What is feminism ?

What is feminism? The simplest and most straight forward definition of feminism is that it is a movement for social, political, and economic equality of men and women. When we say it is a movement it means a group that is working to accomplish specific and set goals. These goals identified by the feminist movement seek social, political and economic change for achieving equality of the gender in every sphere of life. Therefore feminism also means engaging with the government, the law, the social and cultural practices and beliefs of the society and participating in the gainful economic activity "all with a goal" of bringing equality among the sexes.

What is feminism: Personal experience and feminism

Technically now we can say that feminism comprises of a number of social, cultural and political movements, theories and moral philosophies concerned with gender inequalities and equal rights for women. There are many variants of feminism with some versions which involve in analyzing the past and present social and cultural relations and how it affects women’s position in the society, others focusing on gender and sexuality and still many other variants which are more active in the sense that they actually promote women’s rights, interests and issues in the current settings and context and seek active change for the betterment.

What is feminism: Feminists are a diverse group

In fact feminists are an incredibly diverse group involved with many issues but with a common denominator that is women’s emancipation and equality in the society. It is also seen that most women come to feminism through personal experience, which is one of the reasons the core identity of feminism has to be elastic and broad.

What is Feminism: Fearing feminism

Because of some overzealous and fundamentalist elements and a definite amount of negative media publicity feminism is feared and disliked by many in the general society. On the extreme side it is propagated that feminists encourage women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, become lesbians and destroy capitalism. This is far from true.

What is feminism: Feminism does not mean militancy

Feminism is not a militant and revolutionary setup bend upon destroying the society but it is a working knowledge of the history and the present which encourages individuals to act on their own behalf and also for other women in the face of real and actual discrimination in the socio-cultural, political and economic spheres of life.
