The question "what is marriage?" can be understood by looking at the various definitions attributed to marriage. A marriage is an interpersonal relationship with governmental, social, or religious recognition, usually intimate and sexual, and often created as a contract. The most frequently occurring form of marriage unites a man and a woman as husband and wife. Marriage is also defined as a "socially approved" sexual and economic union, usually of a male and a female that is assumed to be more or less permanent. It is a legally recognized union of a man and a woman by ceremony or common law.

As per another definition holy matrimony or marriage is the solemn contract based on a loving relationship between a man and a woman in which they publicly promise to live together “for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health until death do them part”. It is also defined as the union of a man and a woman as husband and wife, which becomes the foundation for a home and family. Historically marriage is considered as a relationship between a male, a female and their families whose primary purpose is to raise offspring. Today many people use the word to describe a committed, loving relationship with or without children. Today even same sex marriages are approved and legal in certain parts of the world.

Marriage is in fact the foundation of the basic unit of the society called as the family and therefore it is the basic building block of the society. It brings significant stability and meaning to human relationships. It remains the ideal for the raising of children. It plays an important role in transferring culture and civilization into future generations.

What is marriage: Marriage is a social institution

Marriage is not merely a private contract, but a social institution of great public concern. The decline in marriage can lead to rise of number of serious social problems. A broken or failed marriage has detrimental negative impact on the individuals where as a successful marriage works as a cushion and shield for the children and the couple involved in the marriage. Regardless of religion, culture or constitutional tradition, societies have always agreed on the institution of marriage.

What is Marriage: Prerequisites for a successful marriage

1. Finding the right person and being the right person.
2. Give in effort to understand each other as it’s important you know yourself and your partner.
3. There should be effort from both sides to make the marriage work and only then a marriage can carry on.
4. Love, commitment, understanding, concern and togetherness are essential building blocks of a good marriage.
5. Physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual compatibility is essential for a good marriage.
6. Marriage is more than the first impression. The first impression is based on the “ideal self” that we try to portray in the beginning of the marriage.
7. Marriage is awareness and acceptance of the contradictions and deviations seen in each other. It is about accepting the “real self” of the other person which is so different from the “ideal self” portrayed initially.
8. Constant commitment and concern for each other is also important for a good marriage.
9. Most importantly it’s about taking time for each other that keeps the fire burning in a good and successful marriage.

What is marriage: The basic building block of the society

As I said before, marriage is the basic building block of the society and this institution has very important role to play in the overall well being and growth of an individual. That’s the answer to the question “what is marriage?”
